PEDIATRIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Pediatric Occupational Therapy assists children in developing enhanced sensory processing, attention, fine motor/gross motor, handwriting, self-help, and adaptive play skills, a child may need to perform important day-to-day activities within the home, school and community environments.

At SINEWS we use treatment methods and strategies to meet the unique needs of each individual child. Evaluations and treatment are provided in the areas of:

  • Fine motor delay (small, precise movements required for writing, cutting, using eating utensils, etc)
  • Gross motor delay (larger movements that include walking, running, sitting, crawling, etc)
  • Sensory Integration (see what it consists on and how important it can be)
  • Visual-perceptual Difficulties (Not poor vision, but the inability to correctly process information taken in through the eyes. This hinders reading, writing, sense of direction, problems judging distance/ speed as well as planning and organizational skills)
  • Autism spectrum Disorders (pervasive developmental disorders, Asperger’s, etc)
  • Learning Disabilities Including Attention Disorders
  • Developmental training (promotion of daily living skills, social behavioral skills, safety skills, and work skills)
  • Adaptive equipment training to compensate for physical limitations (including wheelchairs) and Environmental adaptations
  • Parent/caregiver education and training.

We also provide therapeutic classes in handwriting through the method ‘Handwriting without tears’.
Evaluations will be completed to identify an individual baseline and individual goals for each child necessary to support independent, age appropriate functional skills. Standardized assessments may also be used to collect data regarding baseline function.
Full reports can be produced for school and other medical uses.

Occupational Therapy in the school environment focuses on improving a child’s functional skills as related to his or her performance in the educational setting. Therapy delivery is integrated into the classroom to the greatest extent possible and involves collaboration with the educational staff.
